Residents at New York Apartments recently made history launching Tacoma’s first supermajority tenant union. Their commonsense demands and fight for community protection have inspired neighbors citywide and established Tacoma as a hotbed in the nationwide tenant union movement resurgence.

The NYA Tenant Union only launched in December, 2025, but has already spurred organizing in buildings across their landlord’s local portfolio and throughout Tacoma. Be sure to sign their support petition.

Newcastle Tenant Union launched in Spring 2026, announcing that residents in almost 90 percent of occupied units at Newcastle Apartments signed union cards. They have formed a powerful, united voice to fight for each other and take on their absentee landlords.

Newcastle shares the same absentee, California-based landlords as New York Apartments, who own nearly $22 million worth of rental properties in Pierce County alone. Like NYA, they’ve experienced years of neglect, including rot, mold, incomplete repairs, flooding laundry facilities, and extended periods without hot water.

Newcastle hopes to inspire tenants throughout their landlord’s portfolio and the city to join our powerful, growing movement.
